Helena Ellis - Wisconsin
RGS's one and only girl pupil as she now is. Helena Ellis was in the Classical Sixth in the early 60s and went to Oxford. Later she married Jeremy Janes, also an OW, and they emigrated to the USA. Jeremy died in 2006 and his obituary appeared in the newsletter two years ago. The OW newsletter also once featured the 1961 photo of the Classical Sixth when Helena was in the class (which also appeared in John Mitchell's book of school photos). Peter A Cooke 1935 to 1940 - 1940 Sleepy Hollow Escondido, California 92026
1940 Sleepy Hollow, Escondido, CA 92026 USA Three days after leaving the RGS in Dec. 1940, I started work as a Junior Chemist in Beaconsfield. A year later I moved to Broome and Wade in High Wycombe building Churchill tanks In 1943 I joined the RN as a Radar Mechanic and during the war travelled to Australia, California Egypt, South Africa, India, etc. After the war I worked in my father’s Electrical business. In 1952 I married a German girl, and now have a son in Escondido and a daughter in Las Vegas. Five years later I emigrated for health reasons to Vancouver, then, via Los Angeles, to Escondido, about thirty miles from San Diego, where I started my own business in 1974. I retired first in 1991, but two days later I got another job, and finally retired in 2001. I have only been unemployed for two days in 61 years. I put this down partly to luck and partly to the excellent education I received at RGS. (a full version of Peter’s account will be published hopefully in the OW Magazine. Otto Decker 1948 to 1950
After I passed my Oxford School Certificate at the High Wycombe Technical Institute, in 1948, I moved up Amersham Hill and spent two (2) years, (1948 - 1950) at the RGS to study for the "Oxford Higher School Certificate". Living in Waddesdon, Bucks I became a Boarder, at a time when Reggie Howard was the School Master and Mr. Tucker was the Headmaster. I had two great years at the RGS, participating in the School's Cricket team and in the School's Athletic Program, (no rugby because I was playing football for the Wycombe Wanderers). At the Boarding School I was introduced to my first Television set in Reggie Howard's study and enjoyed playing tennis on Mr. Tuckers private grass court. In 1950 I moved to the United States to join my mother who had arrived there in 1948. With the help of a favorable recommendation from Mr. Tucker, I was admitted to Columbia University in New York City and awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. After two years in the US Army I started my professional career which saw me move from New York, to Ohio, to Pennsylvania, back to New York and finally for 17 years to Puerto Rico. There I had my own company, manufacturing a variety of plastic molded products. I retired in 1996 and moved to Boca Raton, Florida.
My time playing football for the "old" Wycombe Wanderers stood me in good stead in the USA. Here (the game is called Soccer) I played on many 'All Star Teams' including the USA National Team. One game was against no other than my adopted country, England; (we lost 6-3). Sweet revenge for England for what happened in South America in the 1948 World Cup when the USA miraculously beat England 1-0. I look back on the two years at the RGS with a great deal of appreciation, first, for the teachers who prepared me for my professional life and second, for the livelong friends I made and whom I enjoy meeting at the 'Old Boys' Annual Dinners.

I started in 4 shell. I still keep in contact with John Walker RGS 1955-1959, and Chris Date, who was a school prefect about 1958, who also lives in USA in California ( he studied Maths at Jesus Cambridge), and became the Guru, with the late Ted Codd on Relational Database. We all lived in Wendover then. Brief narrative ... Spent two years as articled clerk for Chartered Accountant in the city, but found this so exciting that left and went into Engineering, working for IBM in the UK first in systems engineering then in management. Was actively involved in politics (both as Councillor and Chairman of local Constituency ), Education ( Chairman of Governors at FE college for 15 years) and was Magistrate for 15 years.Have subsequently moved to New Hampshire USA.Now fully retired. Peter Eio 1955 to 1960 - Old Lyme by the Connecticut shore
Since I left RGS, I followed a business career that took me to Scandinavia for 10 years and then back to the UK in 1980 when I joined the LEGO toy Company as MD of their UK operation. From 1989 until I retired in 2002 I was President of LEGO in the Americas based in Connecticut and, for a while, Executive VP of Global Marketing. After "retirement" I spent 5 years as Chairman of the Board of Regents at the University of Hartford and now serve on a number of Company Boards in both the Public and Private sectors as well as some not-for-profit organizations related to education. I guess I must have been somewhat of a late starter in educational matters as I managed to fail my A-levels at RGS but hold Honorary Degrees from two American Universities.I live with Jenny, my wife of 42 years, in Old Lyme by the Connecticut shore and we have three married children and five grandchildren all living in the North-East. A few years ago we became US citizens and hold dual US/British nationality.
I read in your list of Alumni living abroad that Helena Ellis is living in Wisconsin but no address or e-mail is shown. Helena was the only female student amongst over a thousand boys - she was studying Classics (ERT was a Classicist and I'm sure that helped!) I dated Helena for a while during our last year at RGS and when she moved to St Anne's College, Oxford but lost touch over the years - if you have her contact details it would be fun to get in touch.

I was a day boy, wore the maroon uniform at first in form 4G I seem to remember, then dark blue in the 6th form. I was a prefect at one time. The headmaster was Malcom P smith, MPS (Modern Poetry Society) we called the bulletin board and club, but it was really a site devoted to the headmaster and making fun of him!!! I did complete my A-levels and went to Surrey University.I was a member of the Bridge Club and we tied for 1st in the Daily Mail Under 18 Bridge Tourney. We used to practice in a cubby hole above a store room cut into the ceiling, accessed by a ladder and a fan cut into the brick wall to expell the smoke of the ciggies we smoked.

Ian Orme 1963 to 1970 - Colorado
After leaving RGS I did a degree in Physiology at London, then went to the [then] Burroughs Wellcome company where I did a Ph.D. in Immunology. I then did a five year post-doc in New York, where I learned how to grow microbacteria [tuberculosis], then got an Assistant Professorship at CSU. I am now Professor of Microbiology, and one of the leaders of a group called the Mycobacteria Research Labs. I've published about 120 papers, most on the T cell response to TB in aerosol infection models, but more recently we find ourselves doing more applied work like vaccine development and new drug discovery. My lab was recently awarded a contract by the US government to produce components of the TB bacterium [we have a P3 lab where we grow >100L monthly], which we send out free around the world, and to also test some of these proteins as vaccines. I am probably remembered at RGS for my sprinting ability rather than my academics, but the former sadly came to an end in 1978 when I broke my leg at rugby. I've played soccer and rugby for many years since, but have now retired. Now I coach an adult soccer club here in Fort Collins. I still stay good friends with Mick Horswell [63-70] and Andy Nichol [65-70] and visit them in Wycombe 2-3 times a year as well as David Sandles [65-71] who is now living in Vancouver Canada running a large physiotherapy practice. Fort Collins is close to Yellowstone; the Arches National Park, and to Grand Canyon. The Rocky Mountain National Park is next door. Old Boys should feel free to contact me if they are in the area.Updated March 2006

Last December I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and have had a roller-coaster of a year. I have been attending the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas for restaging while I receive my actual chemotherapy at a local hospital near home. Fortunately, I can now swallow again but the prognosis is obviously uncertain. Still, I am in good hands.I made enquiries about treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London but was told that since I had not lived in England for over two years I was not eligible for NHS treatment. When I think how many thousands of pounds I paid into the system it made my blood boil! Modern Britain, I guess.

I'm still amazed that I even managed to stay at the Royal Grammar for as long as I did. Anyone that knew me there would surely agree with this, and be astounded to know that I'm now a Detective Sergeant for the Covington Police Department, living in the state of Louisiana, USA. I somehow managed to avoid expulsion, eventually scraping an O-level in art from underneath the barrel before being released early for bad behaviour. I got another couple of O-levels at night school when I fully realized how foolish I had been, and even managed a few years of college too. Being a dual national, I moved to the States in '86. I originally went into joinery, followed by commercial construction, and then a very financially successful stint in the world of TV and convention set design and fabrication. This success enabled me to pursue my dream of being a police officer where I have been ever since, living happily with my wife and four children. I would like very much to hear from any old boys that remember me, and encourage them to write whenever possible.Updated December 2009

After I left the RGS in 1977 I went on to do an apprenticeship in wood machining with Ercol Furniture. Of course that wasn’t really what I was looking for, so in 1982 after a string of mediocre jobs I took a chance and emigrated to Perth Western Australia, where I now live. I immediately entered a career in sales insurance initially and then a few years on the stock market in Sydney (brackets ‘futures’) and playing in bands in and around Kings Cross. After five years in Sydney I returned to Perth to ‘settle down’. I joined several bands touring extensively around Australia and overseas, ending up with a stint at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Taipai in 1996. I married my beautiful Taiwanese wife in 1997 (better late than never!) and having decided to quit touring I recently started my own recording studio (called Dynamite Music Studio) which I run from home. I am about to become a father for the first time with my baby daughter Alyssa due any day now. My wife Cherry and I are so proud! I would love to hear from any old pals, particularly J F Taylor, John Matthews, Kevin Shakespeare and Jim Metcalf. I have never been back to the UK but would love to show my family around some day. After leaving RGS in 1978, I did a degree in Mining Engineering at Imperial College. After graduating I moved to South Africa where I spent four years working in the gold mines. In 1986, my wife Sue and I then moved to Perth, Western Australia where we have resided since. I spend my days consulting to mining companies both in Australia and offshore. Perth has become a global technical centre of excellence for open pit mining.I generally pass through London a few times each year and it would be good to coordinate one of my visits with an annual OW dinner. While I maintain excellent contact with my colleagues from university days (Imperial College – Royal School of Mines graduates in particular meet for a beer once a month!), I‘ve not been so diligent at retaining the network with my school mates. I do stay in regular touch with Tim Scott who sends me old photos and has told me of the building changes that have taken place at the RGS. I was thrilled to see the quad at RGS pop up on a recent episode of Top Gear.
Outside of work, I have two daughters. One is finishing her second year at University of WA and the other is hoping to join her there next year and is presently doing her year 12 exams. I remain a passionate and committed rugby fan – I’m a far better supporter than I ever was a player. I’m also active in surf lifesaving and run the education programs for the largest surf club on the Perth metropolitan coast. Most weekends throughout the year I’m on the beach or in the ocean. Australia, and Western Australia in particular, appears to have largely dodged the GFC. The mineral resource projects in the state (primarily iron ore and gas) are booming and there are, and will continue to be, lots of opportunities for engineers with an outward looking view on life.

Last year I met up with an old RGS friend Phillip Rickard living in Murchison (a small remote town in the South Island of New Zealand). As it was 50 years since we had seen each other, we had much to talk about. It was only through the OW Directory that we discovered that we were both in New Zealand. I remember the whole school probably in 1946 being directed to picking up all the stones on the two front lawns that were in front of the old building, presumably in preparation for grass sowing.Philip Rickard 1944 to 1950

I spent a couple of years failing to graduate at Birmingham University, eventually leaving to pursue a career in computing, studying with the Open University for the degree instead. Having experienced a couple of redundancies, I went freelance, living in High Wycombe for much of that time with a brief foray to Brussels for 6 months.I met my partner (Jacqi Bartlett) in 1998 not long before the Brussels stint. We lived in London for about a year and then moved up to Bletchley in northern Buckinghamshire until emigrating to New Zealand (Wellington) in 2009 after a long yearning.

After leaving Wycombe in 1990 I completed a BSc in Applied Geology at Birmingham and an MSc in Engineering at Leeds. I started work for Balfour Beatty in civil engineering in the Channel Islands and spent 2.5 years working very lucratively and tax-free in Jersey. With the contract finished I lived for a while back in Yorkshire but soon was head-hunted to Auckland to work as an underground construction engineer on a deep cable tunnel. It was in Auckland that I met my partner Taryn in 1997. Itchy feet in 1999 saw us move to South Island where we lived for a time on the wild west coast where I was working for an engineering consultant. We moved in late 2002 to Nelson where I now am self-employed as a specialist geotechnical and civil consulting engineer. We've got two lovely girls, Georgie and Frankie, and spend most of our time tearing around after them or enjoying the rather more relaxed pace of life here in NZ. I ended up doing French, English and Latin for A level, all rather unsuccessfully I might add.Since when I have worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry for many years before moving to South Africa where I opened my own Sales and Marketing co. in the FMCG world. I have lived 20 mins from the Kruger National Park for the last 25 years, from where we routinely go “twitching “ etc. Life here is very much closer to nature. Anyone interested in the ( Real ) wild side of life needs only to ask and I will happily give them some local guidelines.
I see Bill Seymour from time to time when in UK on business. In the sixth form I played rugby for the 1st XV under Steve Gamester and also gained 3 hard-won A levels. After a year off playing rugby and travelling in New Zealand I ended up at Exeter University graduating in 1988 in Mathematical Statistics and Operational Research. After travelling through Australia and South East Asia I worked in advertising in London. Then, after a teacher training course at Southampton I taught at a Catholic school in Swindon. In 1995 I decided to explore alternative forms of education in the outdoors. I complete a one-year national diploma in Outdoor Education and worked for Outward Bound in Wales. I then met my, now, wife who was due to go back to work for Outward Bound in Canada. The following summer I worked for Outward Bound in Scotland and managed to visit her in Canada. The following two seasons I worked in the Canadian wilderness again for the Outward Bound. In 2000 I heard of a new outdoor school starting in Vancouver that was designed to offer an alternative education to students not successful in the main stream. I am in my second year of the outdoor school and living in Vancouver having received my papers to live permanently in Canada. The outdoor school has been hugely successful and immensely popular. Ows who would like to know what the eurocracy is really about, as well as those just passing through, are more than welcome to get in touch. Since moving here, only one European Commission colleague has admitted to OW status. He is Russell Mildon, currently a director in the agriculture policy field. My brother PJ Madelin still lives in Wycombe, so I travel home to Bucks pretty regularly. I have been appointed Director General for public health and consumer affairs at the European Commission. I will be in charge of a department of 700 staff based in Brussels, Luxembourg and Ireland, contributing to the protection of public health and to the protection of consumers in the European Union. I wonder if this a first for the RGS? It is a priviledge but a daunting appointment, and I will rely on the RGS acquired knowledge of Marcel Proust, the Tudors and Stewarts, the French Revolution and the golden age of Latin literature to afford succour and guidance in the months ahead.Email unknown; if you know the address, please email Ian Clark with the information

I was a boarder at Uplyme with my younger brother James. Having finished an MA in French and Business Studies at Edinburgh University I came to France and undertook to find a graduate job over here. Since then I have worked as a Bond trader for Banque Paribas and BNP Finance. I currently run the French primary dealership for Commerzbank in Paris having worked for 2 years in Frankfurt. Since graduating I have never worked in the UK! I have been married for nearly 10 years and have 2 boys, Alistair aged 6 and Louan aged 3. I would like to hear from any of the French/German A level students and Uplyme/School House boarders.Email unknown; if you know the address, please email Ian Clark with the information

It’s a delight to see so many familiar names on the website. More boarders to chase down - if they’re around; three McNally’s (Chris, Mark and Brendan I think), Noddy and Alistair ‘Plug’ Diack and dozens more. From Rex Knight’s crack biology sixth whatever happened to Phil Allot, Anthony Berendt, Pete Attfield, Tim Airey and Ian Masters? I am in regular contact with Dirge Gardiner, Captain Cutout Copcutt, Plig Lidgley, and Stephen Bourne. I studied Biology, Physics and Chemistry in the 6th form and was Head Boy of School House. After studying rowing, drinking, folk music and womanising at Cambridge, with a minor interest in Pharmacology I went to work for a pharmaceutical company and I am now Business Initiatives Manager at Boehringer Ingelheim. My wife and I live in Surrey and have just celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. We have two daughters. Worst moment: getting caught by John Skipp trying to go for a midnight swim from the boarding house. Funniest moment: witnessing ‘Gasfitter’ Gelsthorpe destroying a fume cupboard with a ‘thermite’ bomb. Greatest disaster: being put in as prop forward by Jock Learmonth.Updated October 2009

Jonathan Symmons 1986 to 1992 - Oegstgeest
Since leaving school I studied Geography at Nottingham Uni then spent two years doing a variety of work and travelling to various parts of the world eg India and Australia. During that time I decided to embark on a career in education and so I did my PGCE at Bristol and started teaching geography at a boys' grammar school in Gloucester in 1998. After two years there my Dutch girlfriend and I who I met in Australia in 1996, decided that 4 years of intermitent visits and long telephone calls was too long, so I moved to Amsterdam in 2000. After one year of working for a telecom company I returned to teaching at the Rijnlands Lyceum in Oegstgeest (just outside Leiden) - I have been working here ever since teaching geography to international students and Dutch students taking a bilingual education. I also find myself in charge of planning the school trips to the UK and USA. It is busy but certainly rewarding. Last year Deborah and I bought a house along a canal and we get married in July next year.Email unknown; if you know the address, please email Ian Clark with the information

Having qualified as Chartered Accountant at Arthur Andersen in London, I joined a company called The Hartstone Group. This was a very acquisitive company and in October 1992 I was posted to Hong Kong as the finance director for the region. I left Hartstone in 1994 to establish my own tax and investment consulting business here in Hong Kong. I count a number of partners in British law and accounting practices as clients along with many investment bankers. In my early days in Hong Kong I got into amateur dramatics and musicals even did a couple of years in pantomime. I met my wife Tracey doing Guys and Dolls and we now have 2 children, Hannah and Luke. I gave up my motor-cross racing which I had done as a schoolboy and got more into golf. Although I still play golf once or twice a month, squash is my latest thing and I am on the committee of the Hong Kong Cricket Club. We are thoroughly enjoying life in Hong Kong, but still plan to head back to the UK sometime. We have bought a house in Long Crendon near Thame.Updated April 2005

After leaving the RGS in 1993, I went to Magdalene College at Cambridge to study Engineering. Most of my friends ended up in consulting or investment banking. I decided that maybe I should try it. At the same time I had also seriously looked into becoming a lawyer too, all a far cry from engineering right!Anyhow I got admitted to both the London School of Economics and the College of Law in Store Street London. Eventually I decided to pursue both at the same time and I ended up doing a full time Masters in International Accounting and Finance at the LSE and a part time CPE (law conversion course) at the College of Law. I am quite sure that I don't want to work as a solicitor though I would like to have some legal knowledge, and I would want to build a career in the investment banking sector. In Spring 1998, I was lucky enough to be selected as one of the three people for the international business exchange programme between the LSE and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, to embark on an MBA (Masters in Business Administration). This place is famous for it economics and finance with many Nobel Prize winners. After finishing my MBA, I started with UBS Warboys, an investment bank, in London. I am now on international assignment in Singapore, enjoying the change of working environment and a change of culture. I would very much to get in touch with the people from my year (1987-1993). Luckily I am in constant contact with people like Woz Pepper, Jon Lippiat, Dez Sheiham.
Back in HK for almost 4 years. Currently working at MSCI, a provider of indices and risk analytics. Married and expecting a daughter. Worked in the city for UBS between 2000 and 2001, then 5 years in Singapore.

I have been working at the law firm Allen & Overy since I started here as a trainee in March 2004. Five years, a six month stint in Luxembourg, and many late nights, on I am now working in Hong Kong and will be out here for at least another couple of years. I qualified into the Litigation department so am using to great effect the verbal skills I perfected in annoying most of my teachers over the years. Since leaving RGS, in addition to Luxembourg I have spent time in France (gap year and ski season), Sweden (Erasmus year studying at Uppsala University), and mostly London (studying at King's College and working until last November). I have also managed to perfect my French, and learn Swedish and a bit of Italian along the way. The most important aspect of the move out here has to be that I am now able to fit rugby into my working schedule; there was insufficient time when I was in London to work 50+ hour weeks, and commute for an hour each way to a rugby pitch.I will be moving to Bangkok from the end of July with the same law firm, Allen & Overy. The intention is that I will be there for a year before returning to Hong Kong for another year.

I work in the Treasury for Allied Irish Bank where I have been for many years now. At the moment I am seconded to a Singaporean Bank, certainly very different. I specialise now in Far East arbitrage. I am married and have 2 beautiful daughters. One thing I am dismayed about out here is the lack of emphasis about team sports, something I always enjoyed at the RGS. Looking at the aerial picture of the RGS it doesn’t seem to have changed that much. I would love to hear from anyone in my form, anyone know of the whereabouts of Michael Baldwin, Jonathan Evans, Simon Lane, Tony Hazelton or anyone else of the basketball team? I am now working as a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the International School of Protocol here in Madrid. The courses I teach are part of the London School of Economics external BSc program. Four years ago, I published the first work on the complete literary oeuvre of Iceberg Slim, Iceberg Slim: The Life as Art. I worked in close co-operation with Mrs. Diane Beck, Slim's widow. Currently, Ice T and Jorge Hinojosa are making a documentary on Iceberg. This should appear sometime next year. I should be pleased if you could give me any information on Martin Charles Connelly and Keith Charles Cameron Clarke, old boys who left the school around 1968. I am also interested in whether you might have any data regarding Cross Country records as I believe I might have held one. Madrid used to be a paradise for English teachers but that is dying out now otherwise I would recommend teaching over here to any new graduates for a while. Great experience. A TEFL in ESL is now almost essential, however.Switzerland
David Neill 1954 to 1961 - Zürich
I did English, History and French in the Sixth Form. Not much of the maths, physics and chemistry have stayed with me. My experiments in the labs tended to fizzle out and fade away, and my equations were never balanced or simultaneous. However, Latin (Gareth Jones) turned out to be very useful when I had to learn enough Italian very quickly to see me through an eighteen month project in North Italy M. Bur's insistence on a good Lille accent made a year at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva much more enjoyable and socially successful, and has ensured that I have never been roofless, hungry or thirsty in France. I still gain a lot of pleasure from reading 'serious' literature and history books. I started in computers entirely by chance many years ago. Since then I have programmed them, analysed systems for them, and managed those who serve them. I have devoted about twenty years to deepening the mysteries of management consulting, and am now happily retired. I have lived in Switzerland for the past thirty-five years, very happily married to a patient and loving wife who taught me Swiss German.
